The Reading League is delighted to welcome our Vice President, Stephanie Finn, to be our speaker on The Next Generation Standards ! She has been an educator for over twenty years. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Elementary Education from Le Moyne College and her Masters in Reading form Syracuse University. Stephanie has been a classroom teacher at the primary and intermediate levels in six different districts and three different states. She has worked as a reading intervention teacher and is currently a Literacy Coach at West Genesee Central School District.
What is different about the Next Generation Standards? How were they developed? What do they mean for instruction? These are just some of the questions that you'll be able to answer after this amazing event.
In 2015, New York State began a process of review and revision of its current P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. The "Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards" were adopted in September 2017 and will be implemented in phases with full implementation in September 2020.
At this event, Stephanie will give an overview of the Next Generation Learning Standards Roadmap and Implementation Timeline to build your knowledge of the new standards.
In addition, the New York State Education Department offers a series of eight topic briefs produced for NYSED by Nonie K. Lesaux, PhD from Harvard University & Emily Phillips Galloway, EdD from Vanderbilt University. These topic briefs complement and support the Next Generation Learning Standards. Stephanie Finn will take us through a close look at these documents and deepen our understanding of advanced literacies.
