The Reading League is delighted to welcome Dr. Mary Schleppegrell from the University of Michigan, an expert in linguistics, to present at our March 8 live event. Such an EYE OPENING presentation will inform so many of us, in a topic that we all will benefit from.
Have you ever looked at academic language and asked yourself how your students will even begin to make sense of it- when it will take some doing even for you to do so? Conversely, have you ever been happily neck-deep in the academic language of your beloved content, and not understood why your students find it so difficult? Have you ever gone over all the vocabulary before teaching the reading, and wondered why your students still didn’t comprehend it? THIS EVENT IS ESPECIALLY PERFECT FOR THOSE WORKING WITH ENL STUDENTS!
Dr. Mary Schleppegrell’s work on language in K-12 schools provides a foothold for teachers to work on academic language in the content areas with their students in a deeper and more helpful way than just working on vocabulary. She and her colleagues have published quite a bit on her professional development work with teachers. Her approach will be extremely helpful for English language learners and native speakers of English alike.
Come one, come all to this informative professional development event!
For this event please plan on arriving a few minutes earlier than normal if you'd like to buy something to eat from the food truck...if you have a few dollars left, you can use them to buy a raffle ticket and support The Reading League's ability to provide high quality, teacher-requested professional development free of charge.
As with all live Reading League events, 2.5 hours of CTLE credit will be provided. Knowledge sheets will be provided to those who register and attend the event.
PLEASE - PLEASE only register for this event if you are certain you can attend. "No shows" result in lost chances for those who would like to have attended as well as expenses and lost volunteer time in planning, printing, toner, etc. Space is always limited, so if you register and become unable to attend, please let us know at least a few days in advance. Thank you.
